How Available is the Information to Citizens During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

USAID Government Accountability Initiative and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection organized a Forum entitled Access to Information in Times of Covid-19 Pandemic to mark International Right to Know Day celebrated worldwide on September 28. The dialogue on the right to free access to information of public importance was attended by representatives of state agencies , civil society organizations and media representatives who explored strategies to promote and improve access and the free flow of information in the Republic of Serbia during  the  pandemic. In addition to Serbian experience presented by Ms. Slavoljupka Pavlovic from the Office of the Commissioner and by Mr. Predrag Kon, the Member of the COVID-19 Crisis Team, the participants had the opportunity to hear experiences from the region from Ms. Anamarija Musa, an international expert on freedom of information and a former Croatian Commissioner for Information of Public Interest, and shared and discussed the role and importance of civil society organizations and journalists in providing information to citizens during the pandemic crisis.

Support to Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection on Marking the International Data Protection Day

USAID Government Accountability Initiative assisted the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection (CPI) to facilitate the Annual Conference on Personal Data Protection, held on 28 January 2020, on the occasion of marking the International Data Protection Day. The aim of the conference was to promote and raise awareness on the right to personal data protection and privacy. Mission Director Mike de la Rosa participated on the Conference panel and offered a message of support. He recalled USAID’s assistance in making governance institutions stronger and more accountable to the people.

USAID Promotes a Culture of Openness, Transparency and Accountability in Serbia

he Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection and the Government Accountability Initiative (GAI) organized a forum citizens’ rights to have free access to information to mark Right to Know Week (September 23-29, 2019).
The Forum, entitled “A Culture of Openness, Transparency and Accountability” engaged Serbian civil society organizations and representatives of media in a dialogue on citizens’ rights to access information of public importance, the current legal framework and operating environment. The need for and possible opportunities for greater and easier access to government information in the Republic of Serbia were identified.
