USAID PARTNERS WITH SIX ADDITIONAL LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO BOLSTER ANTI-CORRUPTION EFFORTS

On November 15, 2019, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the mayors of six cities and municipalities (Niš, Kragujevac, Sremska Mitrovica, Novi Pazar, Žabalj, and Stari grad) to bolster anti-corruption efforts and strengthen transparent, inclusive and accountable local governance. With the seven new partners, USAID is now partnering with 13 local governments to improve transparency and increase public participation in decision making at the local level.
2019 Annual Judges` Conference: Roundtable „Fight against corruption“ and Presentation of the Practicum for Investigation and Adjudication of Corruption Offences

On October 11, during the Annual Judges’ Conference in Vrnjačka Banja, USAID GAI in cooperation with the Supreme Court of Cassation, organized a roundtable on challenges and experiences in the areа of fight against corruption. The introductory presentation on the roundtable was given by Judge Biljana Sinanovic who spoke about the challenges in the implementation of the amendments to the Criminal Code and the A/C Law.

Serbia’s State Audit Institution is Establishing Performance Measures to Enhance Transparency and Accountability in Oversight

The State Audit Institution leadership advanced implementation of its 2019-2023 Strategic Plan in workshops organized by the USAID Government Accountability Initiative from 30th September to 2nd October. SAI is establishing performance measures that the Institution will use to internally assess and publicly report on the financial and other benefits of its work to the National Assembly, government and citizens of Serbia.
City of Vranje Adopts Local Anti-Corruption Plan

On Thursday, September 26th, the City of Vranje adopted a revised Local Anti-Corruption Plan (LAP), drafted by the City with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Government Accountability Initiative and Transparency Serbia. An LAP helps prevent corruption in local public institutions. Vranje adopted its first LAP in 2015, indicating the importance of preventing corruption and protecting the public interest.

he Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection and the Government Accountability Initiative (GAI) organized a forum citizens’ rights to have free access to information to mark Right to Know Week (September 23-29, 2019).
The Forum, entitled “A Culture of Openness, Transparency and Accountability” engaged Serbian civil society organizations and representatives of media in a dialogue on citizens’ rights to access information of public importance, the current legal framework and operating environment. The need for and possible opportunities for greater and easier access to government information in the Republic of Serbia were identified.
